Discussion
- The meeting began with a welcome by Shane Whiteley.
- Members were presented the minutes from the last CEIC meeting (May 21, 2009) and the minutes were approved as presented.
- The next item of discussion for the committee was the AEIS data. SJH has been named an Exemplary Campus by the state of Texas for their performance on the TAKS test. In addition to the rating, SJH has been awarded 6 Gold Star Acknowledgements.
- The committee reviewed the school trends over a five year period. The major discussion was centered around special education students, GT students, At-Risk students and the testing requirements of NCLB and the state. It was noted that in spite of the more rigorous testing standards, the TAKS scores at Spearman Junior High continue to improve not only for all students but for the sub-pops as well. SJH is performing well above the state average on TAKS tests in all areas.
- New goals were developed for performance on TAKS tests. The committee felt that since the “rules” were changing as far as passing requirements that the previous goal of attaining 90% standard was an appropriate goal for the future. An informational packet of data was reviewed to help in developing those goals. The information included demographic data, discipline data, failure rates, a needs assessment survey from the staff and a staff development evaluation.
- The committee was then given a copy of a “draft” Campus Improvement Plan. This is basically last year’s plan with updated data and dates that have been changed. A brief overview was given. Mr. Whiteley informed the committee that the plan was very “rough” and that he was going to share with teachers and ask them for additional input.
- The “Areas in Need of Improvement” section of the Campus Improvement Plan was reviewed. It was felt that all areas listed still need special attention. The committee believed that 2 other areas should be added
- 1. Overcoming cultural barriers – language, value of education, economic status, way of
thinking in general
- 2. Intentionally address the broader spectrum of student needs. There should not be
just a focus on one particular group (i.e. low achievers) but SJH should strive to meet
the students’ needs where they are through differentiated instruction.
- Information about the Elementary/JH UIL meet was shared. The meet will be held at Frank Phillips College on Friday, November 21st.
Adjournment
- The meeting adjourned at 5:45 p.m.
