Chelsey Merrigan Receives March 2020 Teacher on the Rise Award
Traditionally the recipient is notified by a surprise assembly. Due to the circumstances, the committee had to be creative in finding a way to notify winning teachers. Spearman ISD’s administration “snuck in” on a zoom meeting Merrigan was hosting with her Algebra I class. She was probably wondering why all the principals and superintendent were wanting into her digital classroom. When Shane Sumrow from Teacher on the Rise award program entered the class, the fun began. Sumrow announced Merrigan as the March High School Teacher on the Rise recipient!
Heaven Delagarza nominated Merrigan for this award and was present during the recognition.
The teacher I chose for Teacher on the Rise would obviously be Miss Merrigan! Miss Merrigan just started teaching Algebra in Spearman, Texas this year. The very first day of school she introduced herself to the class. If I am not wrong, I remember her saying her three favorite things she loves which is to rodeo, listen to music, and play basketball. Miss Merrigan brings laughter into the classroom every day. I have Algebra every day and some people would say that it stinks but honestly to me it is so much fun. There is not a day where she doesn’t make me smile….well except on test day, GROSS!!
Ms. Merrigan may not know it but she impacts my life every day when I walk in her classroom door. She never misses a day without saying, “Good morning or how are you?” and I love her so much. When I don’t understand a problem, I go and ask for help. I know she always has the answer to my questions.
God made a great choice to bring her to Spearman High School. I hope and pray she NEVER stops teaching. She has a wonderful teaching style and has a huge heart. She will do anything for her students to succeed in school. I think she deserves the Teacher on the Rise Award 100%. If you get picked, I am going to be so excited for you!
Hoping and praying,
