Students of the Month at Spearman High School 


The January Lion’s Club Students of the Month at Spearman High School are seniors, Shaylyn Whiteley and Ever Briseno. 

Shaylyn is the daughter of Shane and Starla Whiteley.  She has one younger brother, Shad Whiteley. Shaylyn has been active in Spearman Lynxette Cross Country, Basketball, Track, and Tennis, National Honor Society, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Texas Panhandle, and Spearman First Baptist Church Youth Group.  While in high school, Shaylyn has achieved numerous awards both athletic and academic.  She was named Academic All-District for four years in Cross Country, three years in basketball and track, and one year in tennis.  Shaylyn was recently named to the Texas High School Coaches Association Elite Cross Country Academic All-State Team, Texas Girls Coaches Association and Cross Country Coaches Association of Texas Academic All-State Teams, as well. She received the 2019 Krista Kirkland Athletic Award, was named Honorable Mention All-District Basketball, is a three-time cross country regional qualifier, was a member of the 2018 District and Area Girls Track Championship Team, was a 2018 State Team Tennis qualifier, and was the 2019 Spearman High School Heisman Award Winner.    Shaylyn was also the 2018 Junior Class Football Homecoming attendant, the 2019 Football Homecoming Queen, was named the Top Student of the Year in Honors English 1, Honors English 2, and Psychology 2301, and she has been listed on the All A Honor Roll throughout high school.  In her spare time, Shaylyn likes spending time with friends and family, watching Netflix shows, and anything she can win at. Shaylyn’s plans after high school include attending college to become a physical therapist. Shaylyn states the best thing about Spearman is, “My favorite thing about Spearman is the community support that the high school gets, especially in sports and other extracurricular activities.  It’s a great atmosphere.”  The best thing about Spearman High School is, “I like that it’s small enough that you know almost everyone so there’s always a friendly face around.”  Shaylyn’s most influential teacher during her school years is Mrs. Cheryl Whitefield. 

Ever is the son of Gumercindo and Maura Briseño.  He has one younger sister, Alexa Briseño, and one younger brother, Edgar Briseño.   Ever has been active in Spearman Lynx track and Spearman Lynx football, as the statistician, and One Chair at a Time.  Throughout high school, Ever was voted the 9th Grade Class Favorite, is a Two Time State Track Qualifier in the 100m wheelchair race, 400m wheelchair race, and Shot Put.  Ever is also a National Qualifier in the Mile Relay and the Sprint Relay.  His team placed third in this event. He was a National Qualifier individually in the 100m and the 200m wheelchair races, where he placed first in both events. At the National competition in Power Lifting, he placed first in the bench lift.   In his spare time, Ever enjoys watching football, cooking out with friends, working at Sergio’s Motors, and working on his pickup.  Ever plans on attending Amarillo College and pursuing a degree in Computer Engineering.  Ever states the best thing about Spearman is, “I like how everyone is supportive and friendly.”  Ever says the best thing about Spearman High School is, “Teachers and staff are very helpful and encouraging.” Ever’s most influential teachers during his school years are Mrs. Krista Baird and Coach Aaron Witten.
