Hispanic Community Council

Spearman ISD Hispanic Community Advisory Committee

The Hispanic Community Advisory Council (HCAC) was formed in 2017. The purpose of the committee is to be able to learn more about the culture and climate of the Hispanic community, open a dialogue between community, parents, and school, and become an advocate for the school district.

A priority for the committee is to determine issues and cultivate solutions. In 2017, four issues were determined: Disconnect between home and school, Extracurricular participation, Immigration/Dreamers, and Making families feel valued and informed of family resources. A plan of action was developed and several strategies were put into place to nurture solutions.

Through the design of the HCAC Action Plan strategies have been put in place and continue today. An Adult ESL class started in 2018 having served approximately one hundred fifty students. Homework Hangout is an after-school program that began in 2018. The program is an after-school tutorial program where junior high students volunteer to assist Emergent Bilingual (EB) students with homework support. E-Club is an after-school club that was developed in 2019 to help the English Language Learners (ELL) and their families by providing diverse activities and fun ways to enrich vocabulary. The strategies are continually being reviewed and assessed. The committee is proud of the progress and desires to continue to reach all families within the Hispanic community.
