SPEARMAN, Texas (May 1, 2026) — Spearman High School has announced seniors Jonathan Hernandez and Sarahi Anguiano as the Panhandle First Bank May Students of the Month. Both students are recognized for their academic achievement, involvement across campus, and the character they have demonstrated throughout their high school careers.

Principal Shannon Jackson said the May honorees exemplify perseverance, growth, and readiness for life beyond high school.

“Jonathan demonstrates a devotion to family that Spearman High School teachers love to see in their students,” Jackson said. “He extends that to friends and teachers throughout the school. His loyalty will serve him well as he explores new facets of his life and pursues a career.”

“Sarahi exhibits grit and determination that Spearman High School teachers hope to instill in all our students,” Jackson said. “No matter the situation, she continues to strive for excellence. It is for this and other attributes that she earned student of the month.”

Jonathan Hernandez

Hernandez, the son of Jose and Patricia Hernandez and brother to Johann and Itzel Hernandez, is recognized for his involvement in academics, extracurricular activities, and athletics. He is a member of Future Farmers of America (FFA), National Honor Society (NHS), Spanish Club, and Yearbook, and has competed in basketball, cross country, football, and track.

In University Interscholastic League (UIL) academics, he has participated in Calculator Applications and Number Sense. His accomplishments include earning medals and certificates in cross country and track, as well as being recognized as an outstanding student in geometry during his freshman year.

Outside of school, Hernandez enjoys working out, running, cooking new recipes, and collecting LEGO sets.

After graduation, he plans to serve in the United States Air Force.

Hernandez shared a message of individuality and self-confidence as his advice to underclassmen.

“There’s only one of you, so don’t push yourself to be someone else,” he said.

He described his senior year in three words: “fun, exhausting, and procrastinated,” and noted that one of the most important lessons he has learned is that high school is not as difficult as it is often made out to be.

Hernandez identified Dr. Michael Ralston as his most influential teacher.

“Jonathan is a remarkable young man. I see him involved in so many activities, still excelling in all that he does,” Ralston said. “He acts with kindness and consideration, and he truly cares for the people around him.  I am excited for Jonathan's future in the military because he will make all of us very proud.”

Sarahi Anguiano

Anguiano, the daughter of Roberto and Ludivina Anguiano and sister to Fernando Anguiano, is recognized for her academic excellence and dedication to extracurricular involvement. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has been actively involved in band.

Her accomplishments include earning All A Honor Roll recognition, Frank Phillips College Dean’s Honor Roll honors, certification in telemedicine and CPR, and advancing to All-Region Band as well as Area competition for two years in marching band.

Outside of school, Anguiano enjoys baking and cooking, which she describes as creative outlets that have shaped her perspective on life.

“Life is like a recipe; it should be taken step by step,” Anguiano said. “Some problems are bound to happen, but with resilience, one can overcome all obstacles.”

After graduation, she plans to attend college and pursue a career as a dental hygienist, with the goal of helping others feel more comfortable receiving oral care while improving their overall health.

Anguiano said she appreciates the supportive environment at Spearman High School.

“I like how Spearman is very supportive of everyone’s accomplishments,” she said.

Her advice to underclassmen is straightforward: “Do not procrastinate.”

She described her senior year in three words: “unpredictable, short, freedom.”

Anguiano identified Sally Swan as her most influential teacher.

“She is always there to support and help you no matter how busy she may be,” Anguiano said. “She pushes her students to go above and beyond.”

“Sarahi is the type of student that makes teaching exciting. Her health education pathway at SHS has been filled with challenges,” Swan said. “Sarahi has faced each one with quiet grace, determination, and a beautiful smile. She is going to continue her education and do great things. Her passion for learning and her determination to understand each process is going to make her a perfect fit in the dental arena.”

As the final recipients for the 2025–2026 academic year, Hernandez and Anguiano join a distinguished group of students recognized throughout the year for their commitment to excellence and their impact on the Spearman High School community.
