Mary Beth Hicks is married to Jordan, and they have two children. She teaches English I, Journalism, and ESOL. She is the ESL Coordinator for the high school. Interacting with her students is something she really enjoys about her job. “It's amazing to see the positive reaction from students when they feel acknowledged. It is so fun getting to see my students around town working at their jobs, performing in their games, activities, etc. I am a firm believer that you must form those relationships with kids, and everything will fall into place. Teaching teenagers comes with its challenges, but I wouldn't want to be doing anything else,” shared Hicks.
“My first year of teaching was challenging in my ways. I had allowed my students to have a little party at the end of the year, and they brought snacks and food. One girl's mother had made burritos for the whole class, but they kept slowly disappearing. We were mystified about the disappearing burritos, until I learned later of one of the other students from class had taken them out to the AG shop and sold them to the kids out there! #teacherfail,” laughed Hicks.
Hicks attended elementary school is Spearman and graduated from Gruver High School. She earned her bachelor’s degree at West Texas A&M University (WTAMU). She is working on a master’s degree at WTAMU in school counseling + LPC.
Her goals include becoming a well-respected teacher by her students and colleagues. “My long-term goals are to eventually become a counselor where I can help students of all ages outside of the classroom setting with any issues they may be struggling with,” shared Hicks.
Congratulations on following your dreams of becoming a school counselor and for the relationships you have built along the way!
