October is National Principal’s Month. This month-long celebration is a time to recognize and thank our hard-working principals on each campus of Spearman Independent School District. We are fortunate to have outstanding men and women lead the campuses. Cayla Schroeder is the assistant principal at Gus Birdwell Elementary. She has taught at Spearman ISD for thirty years. This is her first year as the assistant principal. “Friendships and relationships make for a good day at school. I believe both of these things promote student and staff motivation. It is so nice to come to GBE and see teachers and students smiling, hugging, and helping each other out in tough situations,” shared Schroeder. Adjusting to change can be challenging at times. Schroeder stated, “I'm most proud of how our campus has adjusted to new administration. They have all been so supportive as I learn the many new tasks of being an assistant principal. They jump in, help me, and teach me as I go. I truly am proud and feel like we have the best school around.” She is inspired by learning new things, helping others, and meeting goals. “I also love the support that my family gives me when we have a difficult situation that we are facing. I can always count on them,” added Schroeder. Welcome to the administration team. Your years of service to SISD is an inspiration to others in the profession.

Spearman ISD will be recognizing staff members who go above and beyond with the Spotlight Above and Beyond Award. Mary DeLaRosa is being spotlighted for October. Mary DeLaRosa is a custodian at Spearman Junior High. She is a true leader and professional. “Mary goes above and beyond in many ways. She trains new staff members and is always looking to do more than what is expected of her. We recently were short-handed. I spoke with Mary and explained we needed to some extra help in the fieldhouse. Mary and her team stepped right in and took on the additional responsibility,” said Dan Gist, Spearman Superintendent. “My grandfather always said, “The sign of a great worker is finding something to do before you are told,” reminisced Gist. This is a great example of what Mary does at work every day! Congratulations, Mary on a job well done.

Spearman ISD will be recognizing staff members who go above and beyond with the Spotlight Above and Beyond Award. Abby Pipkin and Adriana Mendoza, are being spotlighted for October. Abby Pipkin and Adriana Mendoza teach English Language Arts and Reading (ELAR) at Spearman Junior High. Pipkin teaches 6th and 8th grade ELAR, and Mendoza teaches 7th grade ELAR. “These fabulous teachers had the idea of hosting a Publishing Party at Spearman Junior High. They took the time to decorate the hallway and arrange their classrooms to make it inviting to the parents. Every student published a paper. Their work was displayed in the classroom and hallway, “stated Craig Black, Spearman Junior High Principal. There were over eighty guests that attended the Publishing Party. “Both of these ladies are great classroom teachers, and they chose to make positive connections with the parents. It was a great success. We are looking to expand the idea to other departments,” added Black. Congratulations on a very deserving award!

October is National Principal’s Month. This month-long celebration is a time to recognize and thank our hard-working principals on each campus of Spearman Independent School District. We are fortunate to have outstanding men and women lead the campuses. Lizet Olmos is the new principal at Gus Birdwell Elementary. She previously was the assistant principal. " If you have been at GBE before, you know it is just a great place to be. If it ever begins to feel like a bad day, someone on campus will fill your heart with joy,” shared Olmos. She added how proud she was of the staff at GBE. “Being part of the GBE staff is something to feel very proud of. We had to survive a few days shorthanded in the custodial department and without question many of the staff members jumped in to help. They threw away trash and vacuumed classrooms. The staff at GBE is remarkable, and I am very proud to be a part of it.” Did you know that Olmos can predict things pretty well. “My husband doesn’t always like my sports predictions ,” laughed Olmos. Another interesting fact is she has not watched a scary movie since 2008! Her parents are her inspiration. “ My parents are hardworking, humble, and kind. They are always willing to lend a hand. They continuously remind me to put God first and the rest will fall into place,” shared Olmos. Olmos grew up in Spearman and still remembers the ESL class with Mrs. Stinson. “She had a paddle accessible. Although she never used it on me, she can have most of the credit of why I learned English so fast,” laughed Olmos. Keep enjoying the little moments and smiling at the great things happening at GBE.
