Coach Klafka was recently interviewed by a former coach who runs a state wide social media site. Enjoy his interview: (Credit Source: Coaches Corner)
Dustin Klafka - Head Girls Basketball/Girls Coordinator Spearman High school.
“I’m a big “why” and “purpose” guy. We talk and teach a lot about both with our athletes and coaches. First of all I believe coaching is a calling. It’s also my belief that to truly be a transformational coach and not just a transactional your leadership style has to start with why you do what do. I’m a big Simon Sinek fan I’ve read all his stuff and one of his big things is that “People don’t buy what you do they buy why you do it.” That being said my why is to inspire purpose driven lives and touch those lives positively.”
“This is probably the toughest question for me. We’ve been fortunate enough to win a lot of games with a lot of great kids. Two years into our program here in Spearman last year we were able to win our district, which has always been extremely difficult with the likes of Canadian, Bushland, Dalhart and so, for the first time in 10 years and play in a regional quarterfinal game for the first time in forever. But all that being said I think I’m proudest of the relationships we built with kids, parents, and colleagues over the years. To get a call or text from a former player is so much more rewarding than any gold ball than we’ve ever won.”
“I’ve been blessed with a special family. I’ve been married to my high school sweetheart for 24 years, Missy. Formerly Missy Frazier played and won a state championship playing for Legendary Coach Dean Weese that I still proudly call a friend and a mentor. Missy is the strongest, most selfless, competitive person I’ve ever met and serves on staff with me here as an assistant coach. Her and good Lord has blessed me with four kids. Brayden our oldest plays football at West Texas A&M university. Lexi is a freshman at WT and was starter and all-district player for us last year on our regional quarter final team. Blayne is a junior here at Spearman and loves football. Laramie is our youngest and we definitely started over with her. She is a 4th grader that loves basketball and acts just like her mom so I have no worries whatsoever about her. Truly been blessed far better than I deserve.”
