Spearman High School February Lion’s Club Students of the Month
The February Lion’s Club Students of the Month at Spearman High School are seniors, Daniela Hernandez and Marco Salgado.
Daniela is the daughter of Robert Cantu and Yesenia Hernandez. Daniela has one older sister and brother-in-law, Grisely and Jesus Murillo, and one younger brother, Robert Cantu Jr. She has been active in National Honor Society, Spanish Club, Art Club, and track. While in high school, Daniela has received the highest score possible at the VASE art competition for two consecutive years, was named the Top Student of the Year in physics, and has been listed on the All A Honor Roll throughout high school. In her spare time, Daniela loves painting and drawing and she enjoys going to watch the Lynx play football and basketball. Her future plans include attending college where she plans on majoring in accounting. Daniela states the best thing about Spearman is, “I like that everyone knows everyone and how amazing the community is. Also, I like that no matter what - the people in this town support each other.” The best thing about Spearman High School is, “I like how much school spirit that the students have, as well as, how much the teachers care about all of their students.” Daniela’s most influential teacher during her school years is Mr. Mike Rountree. Daniela states, “Mr. Rountree has influenced and taught me many things in the three years that I have had him as a teacher.”
Marco is the son of Frank and Bertha Salgado. He has one younger sister, Ava Salgado. Marco has been active in UIL One Act Play, UIL Congressional Debate, UIL Number Sense, Accounting, Copy Editing, Headline Writing, and Mathematics, Marching Band, Student Council, and National Honor Society. He is currently serving as the Senior Class Vice-President and NHS Secretary. Marco has also competed in All Region Band and UIL Solo/Ensembles. While in high school, Marco has been listed on the All A Honor Roll, received All-Region band Honors, was named One Act Play 1st District Stage Manager, was a Congressional Debate State Qualifier, was named the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) Representative, and was a UIL two year Solo/Ensemble State Competitor. In his spare time, Marco enjoys volunteering at Little League, playing chess, learning about new topics, listening to music, hanging out with friends, and relaxing with a nice cup of coffee. His future plans include attending Colorado School of Mines to pursue a Mechanical Engineering degree. He plans to also work towards his masters or doctorate degree or work for a generous salary. Marco states the best thing about Spearman is, “It’s a small town. I’ve seen the city mentality and everyone seems so lonely. It could be a city of millions of people, but everyone seems so distant. Spearman is a town where I can go to Lowes for milk, but come out an hour later because of the amazing conversations with great people. That’s what I like about Spearman.” Marco says the best thing about Spearman High School is, “The teachers try. They make genuine connections and sometimes are the best part of my day. Spearman teachers have pushed me, encouraged me, and allowed for my four years at Spearman High School to be phenomenal.” Marco’s most influential teacher during his school years is Mr. Mike Rountree.

Staff Spotlight by Kristi Ramon
Maranda Loomis teaches fourth grade English Language Arts (ELA) at Gus Birdwell Elementary. “I love the unfiltered nature of younger children and the funny things they share with me,” shared Loomis.
Loomis attended Spearman schools from kindergarten-twelfth grade. She is a proud graduate of Spearman High School and Texas Tech University. She has raised her children in Spearman, and her two oldest children have graduated from Spearman High School. Her youngest daughter is a student at Spearman High School.
“I had the privelege of teaching one of my own children if fifth grade. I assigned our normal Tuesday homework, and she came up to me and said, “Really mom, you’re assigning homework on my birthday!” laughed Loomis.
A career goal is to be a better teacher today than what she was yesterday. “I take one day at a time. My work experience prior to education was in librarianship. I may pursue that when I am an empty-nester,” remarked Loomis.
Loomis stated, “My greatest accomplishment is raising my children. I am very proud of the people they are becoming and the choices they have made for their lives. My kids are my biggest blessings,”

Mrs. Smith is spreading kindness and fun on pajama day at Gus Birdwell Elementary.
GBE celebrated the students who participated in UIL today with a pizza luncheon and presentation of awards. We are so proud of each of these students. A big thank you to PTO for providing cookies.

Perryton Masonic Lodge has partnered with SISD for several years to provide our first grade students with a dental hygeine packet. The Packet provides each student with a quality toothbrush, toothpaste, timer, floss , and educational material for the entire family on dental care. thank you for keeping our Lynx Learners smiling bright.
Teacher Spotlight by Kristi Ramon
Starla Whiteley has been in the profession for twenty-four years. She is a West Texas A&M University graduate where she was a member of the Lady Buff Basketball Team. She is married to Shane, and they have one daughter that graduated from Spearman High School, and a son who is a junior at Spearman High School.
Whiteley teaches 8th grade health, is the head cross country boys/girls’ coach, and is the head high school girls track coach. Her teaching experience includes high school honors English, English as a Second Language (ESL), and science. “Athletes are the best thing about my job. Whether I win or lose with them, I just hope they know I was in their corner while I coached/taught them and as they go throughout their lives,” shared Whiteley.
“Teaching/coaching my own kids, winning tight competitive basketball games, watching Lynx and Lynxettes at the State XC Meet and State Track Meet, having a front row seat when our athletes earned medals or new personal records, and seeing Champion names on the gym wall are some of my most favorite memories,” reminisced Whiteley.
Whiteley has earned many awards in her career including 2009, 2010, 2011 Coach of the Year, CCAT; 2010 Cross Country Coach of the Year, TGCA; 2011 AGN Cross County Coach of the Year; and December 2020 Spearman ISD Employee of the Month.
Congratulations on impacting the lives of others. You are a great asset to the SISD team!

Teacher Spotlight by Kristi Ramon
Shanna Kenney is the high school Special Education (SPED) teacher. She has taught fourteen years with twelve of those years in Spearman. “I love that my job allows me to work with all four grade levels of students and all subjects in high school,” shared Kenney.
She is a graduate of Spearman High School and West Texas A&M University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Special Education. She is currently working on her master’s degree at Lamar University as an Educational Diagnostician.
Kenney has three children who all graduated from Spearman High School. She is engaged to Taff Tyler. In her spare time, she enjoys being outdoors, working out, and cooking.
