Staff Spotlight by Kristi Ramon Stacie Black teaches pre-K at Gus Birdwell Elementary. She loves her job. “I love all the sweet smiles and hugs I get every day,” shared Black. She is married to Craig, and they have two children. Their son graduated from Spearman High School and daughter is a sophomore at Spearman High School. Black is a graduate of Angelo State University. Her son is in his second year at Angelo State University. “I had a student that was in trouble. Suddenly, he started doing well and wanted to eat lunch next to me every day. It made my heart so happy until I realized he only wanted to eat next to me so he could be first in line!” laughed Black. “The joy and excitement I see on the student faces makes me want to be a better teacher than I was the day before,” commented Black. Her goal is to love, teach, and prepare her babies to be ready for kindergarten. Congratulations on a job well done! Your students will be successful because of you.

Spearman ISD February Employee of the Month Karina Baca teaches fifth grade reading at Gus Birdwell Elementary (GBE). She is a leader for the English Language Arts Reading (ELAR) department. Holding her students to a high standard has paid off for both her and the students. Baca recently worked with elementary principal, Mrs. Beck, to develop a tutorial plan for the campus. “Karina was the UIL coordinator for our campus and did an amazing job. She was extremely organized and took care of the all the details to make UIL run smoothly,” shared Mrs. Beck, GBE principal. Another thing I appreciate about Karina is her willingness to share her ELAR knowledge with me, her math brained principal!” Baca is on multiple committees and brings a great deal of expertise on each committee. She serves on the District Education Improvement Committee (DEIC), Hispanic Community Advisory Council (HCAC), Teacher’s Voice, and E-Club. “Karina is a hard worker and a great teacher. We are blessed to have her as part of the GBE team,” commented Beck. Congratulations on a well-deserved recognition! Jennifer Richardson teaches 6th grade social studies and 7th grade history at Spearman Junior High. She is the department chair for social studies. “Jennifer is an outstanding teacher. She is very knowledgeable of her subject area, and you can tell she enjoys teaching, “shared Spearman Junior High principal, Craig Black. Classroom management comes easy for Richardson. She holds students to a high standard. “Her classroom discipline is top notch. Mainly, because of the positive relationships she has with her students. Her classroom is always very neat and extremely organized. It helps provide a culture that is expected of her students,” added Black. She understands how to use data to drive her instructional decisions, and will help a co-worker anytime there is a need. You may find her at school early or even late if that is what it takes to help a student. Congratulations, keep up the great work! Josh Martinez is Spearman ISD’s Maintenance Supervisor and Justin Roberts works for the Maintenance Department. Recently when SISD had to close school due to the extreme weather conditions, Martinez and Roberts were working hard to clear the snow. They worked late into the night and early morning to clear sidewalks and parking lots so it was safe for the students and staff to return to school. “I am looking for staff that go above and beyond their everyday duties to receive the Employee of the Month, and Josh and Justin recently went way above their daily responsibilities,” shared Superintendent Dan Gist. Congratulations, on being recognized for your extra work.

Spearman High School February Lion’s Club Students of the Month The February Lion’s Club Students of the Month at Spearman High School are seniors, Daniela Hernandez and Marco Salgado. Daniela is the daughter of Robert Cantu and Yesenia Hernandez. Daniela has one older sister and brother-in-law, Grisely and Jesus Murillo, and one younger brother, Robert Cantu Jr. She has been active in National Honor Society, Spanish Club, Art Club, and track. While in high school, Daniela has received the highest score possible at the VASE art competition for two consecutive years, was named the Top Student of the Year in physics, and has been listed on the All A Honor Roll throughout high school. In her spare time, Daniela loves painting and drawing and she enjoys going to watch the Lynx play football and basketball. Her future plans include attending college where she plans on majoring in accounting. Daniela states the best thing about Spearman is, “I like that everyone knows everyone and how amazing the community is. Also, I like that no matter what - the people in this town support each other.” The best thing about Spearman High School is, “I like how much school spirit that the students have, as well as, how much the teachers care about all of their students.” Daniela’s most influential teacher during her school years is Mr. Mike Rountree. Daniela states, “Mr. Rountree has influenced and taught me many things in the three years that I have had him as a teacher.” Marco is the son of Frank and Bertha Salgado. He has one younger sister, Ava Salgado. Marco has been active in UIL One Act Play, UIL Congressional Debate, UIL Number Sense, Accounting, Copy Editing, Headline Writing, and Mathematics, Marching Band, Student Council, and National Honor Society. He is currently serving as the Senior Class Vice-President and NHS Secretary. Marco has also competed in All Region Band and UIL Solo/Ensembles. While in high school, Marco has been listed on the All A Honor Roll, received All-Region band Honors, was named One Act Play 1st District Stage Manager, was a Congressional Debate State Qualifier, was named the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) Representative, and was a UIL two year Solo/Ensemble State Competitor. In his spare time, Marco enjoys volunteering at Little League, playing chess, learning about new topics, listening to music, hanging out with friends, and relaxing with a nice cup of coffee. His future plans include attending Colorado School of Mines to pursue a Mechanical Engineering degree. He plans to also work towards his masters or doctorate degree or work for a generous salary. Marco states the best thing about Spearman is, “It’s a small town. I’ve seen the city mentality and everyone seems so lonely. It could be a city of millions of people, but everyone seems so distant. Spearman is a town where I can go to Lowes for milk, but come out an hour later because of the amazing conversations with great people. That’s what I like about Spearman.” Marco says the best thing about Spearman High School is, “The teachers try. They make genuine connections and sometimes are the best part of my day. Spearman teachers have pushed me, encouraged me, and allowed for my four years at Spearman High School to be phenomenal.” Marco’s most influential teacher during his school years is Mr. Mike Rountree. Congratulations to Daniela and Marco on being named the Spearman High School February Lion’s Club Students of the Month.

Staff Spotlight by Kristi Ramon Maranda Loomis teaches fourth grade English Language Arts (ELA) at Gus Birdwell Elementary. “I love the unfiltered nature of younger children and the funny things they share with me,” shared Loomis. Loomis attended Spearman schools from kindergarten-twelfth grade. She is a proud graduate of Spearman High School and Texas Tech University. She has raised her children in Spearman, and her two oldest children have graduated from Spearman High School. Her youngest daughter is a student at Spearman High School. “I had the privelege of teaching one of my own children if fifth grade. I assigned our normal Tuesday homework, and she came up to me and said, “Really mom, you’re assigning homework on my birthday!” laughed Loomis. A career goal is to be a better teacher today than what she was yesterday. “I take one day at a time. My work experience prior to education was in librarianship. I may pursue that when I am an empty-nester,” remarked Loomis. Loomis stated, “My greatest accomplishment is raising my children. I am very proud of the people they are becoming and the choices they have made for their lives. My kids are my biggest blessings,” Congratulations on a successful career and on raising great SISD kids!
