January Employee of the Month
Lance Swan teaches Agriculture Science at Spearman High School. During the Christmas break, there was a water leak at the Ag barn. Mr. Swan went into action as soon as the leak was discovered. He made the necessary phone calls to get the appropriate people and resources to fix the problem. Swan spent several days during the break managing the situation. “Mr. Swan went above and beyond the call of duty. I was out of town when the water leak occurred. Mr. Swan called to inform me of the incident. I offered to get the help needed, but Mr. Swan had it handled,” shared James Layman, Spearman High School Principal.
Swan is a positive role model to the students and staff. “He has a great attitude, and it shows in all he does,” stated Mrs. Ramon. “He is a natural mentor where staff members find it comfortable to ask him for advice,” added Mrs. Ramon.

SISD Employee of the Month
Kara Harrell and Norma Hinojos teach Reading Recovery at Gus Birdwell Elementary. “They have spent countless hours this school year providing professional development on reading practices, running records, and guided reading to the kindergarten through second grade staff. They have planned and presented sessions as well as modeled lessons, observed lessons, and given feedback to teachers,” shared Alexis Beck, Gus Birdwell Elementary Principal.
Both teachers are veteran teachers that are committed to their students. Beck added, “They take great pride in their jobs, love their students, and are great supports to the campus. They continually strive to improve their craft and are amazing teachers.”

Gus Birdwell Elementary will be continuing with late start Fridays this semester. Each Friday the first bell will ring at 8:15 and the tardy bell rings at 8:20. The only exceptions are on early out Fridays. On those Fridays school begins at regular time.
We are future ready! SISD brings awareness to the many options for the student’s future. Future Awareness Day is celebrated each month.

Staff Spotlight
Brandi Cogdill is the One Act Play (OAP) coach for Spearman High School. “I love and breathe theater! I love to sing, dance, act, design, and direct, “shared Cogdill.
Cogdill grew up in Spearman. Her parents are Ronnie and Sam Cogdill. She is engaged to Evan Bailey.
Studying theater at Amarillo College and West Texas A&M University earned her associate and bachelor’s degrees. She completed her student teaching at Borger Middle School. She had the opportunity to direct the middle school OAP last semester. Her appreciation for her mentor, Zeke Lewis, is evident by her success as a student teacher.
Cogdill has a passion for theatre and enjoys seeing the passion the students bring to the stage. “My goal is for the students to find an appreciation for theatre and find a home onstage, offstage, or in the audience,” stated Cogdill.

The Spearman Junior High games originally scheduled for Monday, January 16th have been moved to Thursday, January 19th.
Staff Spotlight
Fanny Chavira joined the Spearman Junior High staff in December. She is the first person you will see when you go to the junior high; she is the secretary. She was a paraprofessional at Gus Birdwell Elementary before taking a two year leave to stay home with her baby.
Chavira graduated from Spearman High School and earned her phlebotomy certificate after high school.
She is like many and puts shopping at the top of her favorite list of hobbies!

Staff Spotlight
Tucker Howell teaches Ag Science at Spearman High School. She graduated from Sudan High School and recently graduated from West Texas A&M University (WTAMU).
She was awarded being on the President’s List while attending WTAMU. Her future goals are to potentially get her master’s degree.
Reading, spending time with family, and baking are some of her favorite hobbies. Her weenie dog, Finn, gets the most attention out of her!
