December Employee of the Month
Shelby Reagan teaches science at Spearman High School (SHS) and is the yearbook sponsor.
“Mrs. Reagan can be seen at many of the school events whether cheering on the students or taking a few pictures for the yearbook. Speaking of yearbook, Mrs. Reagan is the coordinator for the yearbook, and this is no simple task. She is meticulous in her planning and is responsible for coordinating the chaos during picture day,” shared James Layman, SHS principal.
Her leadership skills come naturally. “Mrs. Reagan is a leader on the Spearman High School campus. She is always present, maintains a high level of professionalism, and collaborates with her peers. She provides her students with an engaging classroom environment, strives to create a lifelong love for learning, and still maintains high expectations for all of her students,” added Layman.
Reagan serves as a representative on the Teacher’s Voice committee. “While many in the profession have to work years to become a great teacher, Mrs. Reagan does so quite naturally,” stated Layman.
Congratulations on a job well done!

December Employee of the Month
Adriana Mendoza is the ELAR teacher for 7th grade at Spearman Junior High. She also teaches one section of 6th grade ELAR.
“Adriana has been a great team player since she came to Spearman. She taught 8th grade when she first came here and has since moved to 7th grade. She has been willing to help out where there are needs,” shared Spearman Junior High Principal, Craig Black.
Sharing ideas with coworkers and staying organized is an effective trait in an educator. Black commented, “Adriana is always willing to share ideas with her coworkers. She is very constructive in PLC planning time to share what is working in her classroom. She also volunteered to coach on the UIL academic team,” added Black.
Spearman ISD’s theme for this school year is Building Relationships. “Adriana works to build relationships with the students. She always wants what is best for kids and goes above to find out what their needs are. She truly has a good heart for her students. Adriana is good at looking for new ways to reach students whether it be with curriculum or instructional strategies,” shared Black.
Black smiled and stated, “Adriana always comes to work with a smile on her face and is energetic with her students.”
Congratulations on a job well done!

December Employee of the Month
Christa Turner teaches fifth grade at Gus Birdwell Elementary (GBE). She is the UIL coordinator for GBE. “When I asked Christa if she would consider being the UIL coordinator, she immediately agreed. The UIL coordinator has to be organized and well prepared. She put in a lot of time and energy organizing coaches, teams, paperwork, buses, and many other things,” shared Alexis Beck, GBE principal. It takes a great deal of time coordinating the teams, students, and staff with the many different events in UIL. Beck added, “Christa spent many hours communicating with Bushland and getting the campus prepared to compete. One thing I love about Christa is that she is always looking to do better. We competed all day on Friday. Saturday morning by 8:30 am, I had an email including ways that we could do better next year, things to remember, and general notes for UIL.”
“Christa is also a great classroom teacher. She stepped into some big shoes when she took over 5th grade math and has done an excellent job. She pushes her students to do their best and holds them accountable while constantly working to better herself,” stated Beck.
Teacher responsibilities do not stop after the last bell of the day. “Many days after school, you will find her in her classroom working with a small group of students who need extra help. You might also see Christa working the gate at football and basketball games or volunteering to work Saturday school for the junior high. Christa is a true asset to GBE,” commented Beck.
Congratulations on a job well done!

On December 1st, two Spearman Jr. High students, Maddie Lozano (8th) and Connor Lozano (6th), competed in Olympic weightlifting at the North American Open Finals in Atlanta, Georgia.
Connor competed in the 49kg weight class and placed 2nd overall in the 13 and under age division. He had an exceptional performance successfully completing all 6 of his lifts, snatching a best 43kg/95lbs, and a 55kg/121lbs clean and jerk. His 98kg total will move him to 3rd in the nation in the 49kg weight class for the 2023 year.
Maddie is the reigning 59kg National Champion but moved up to the 64kg weight class for the meet. She matched a personal best 62kg/137lbs snatch but struggled in the clean and jerk due to illness, lifting 66kg/145lbs on her first attempt and missing her next two attempts at 70kg due to an elbow unlocking in the jerk. Her performance was still good enough to win gold in the 13 and under 64kg weight class with a 128kg total and will count as new Texas state records! She is now the 2022 National Champion and North American Open Champion!
Congrats to both of these strong students!
