On Thursday, April 24, 2025, the SJH students in the GT program, were lucky enough to see where the "Buffalo Roam" and the longhorns, pigs and horses play. Chad Riggins was so kind to allow the students to visit his playground for these amazing animals. They also got to be up close and personal with the show pigs and witnessed actual bareback pig riding. After the awesome visit with these animals, Gordon's Fountain prepared milk shakes for this great group of 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. A special thank you to Mrs. Baca for allowing us to go on this trip and all the other fun things we've experienced this year. SJH students are so blessed to have the BEST community and administrators to support the GT program. A special thank you to Chad and Mendy for taking their time to allow these students to have this wonderful experience. It was a great day to be at SJH!

Spearman ISD Names 2025 Lynx Legacy Distinguished Alumni Spearman ISD proudly announces Gary Ellsworth as the 2025 recipient of the Lynx Legacy Distinguished Alumni Award. This prestigious honor recognizes Spearman High School graduates who have made significant contributions in public service, academic excellence, and professional achievement, at least a decade after graduation. Gary Ellsworth, son of Alton and Peggy Ellsworth, began his education in kindergarten at Mrs. Womble’s home before attending Spearman schools through his 1967 graduation. His class was the first to complete all four years in the current high school building still in use today. With a service legacy spanning nearly five decades, Ellsworth’s impact on Spearman and beyond is profound. In 1976, his family purchased the Lyric Cinema, which Gary acquired fully in 2001. Since then, he has faithfully operated the theater, welcoming school groups with free popcorn and drinks. Under his stewardship, Lyric Cinema was named Business of the Year in 2005 and again in 2022. Ellsworth’s contributions to the legal field are equally significant. In 2008, he earned the Letter of Commendation for Excellence in Service from the Texas Municipal Courts Education Center (TMCEC) in Austin. A TMCEC faculty member for nearly twenty years, he has trained both new and experienced judges statewide on traffic safety, judicial ethics, legislative updates, and defendant rights. His leadership extended to the Texas Municipal Courts Association (TMCA), where he served as President from 2022 to 2023, spearheading the successful modernization of the Association’s By-Laws. TMCA also honored him as Municipal Court Judge of the Year for 2010–2011, a testament to his lasting influence on judicial education and service. Beyond the courtroom, Ellsworth has demonstrated a deep commitment to public safety and community development. Appointed by Hansford County Judge Benny Wilson, he served as Emergency Management Director, creating and overseeing the county’s emergency response plans. He also led the Spearman Housing Authority as Executive Director, addressing local housing needs and fostering community growth. Faith and youth outreach have been central to Ellsworth’s service. For fifteen years, he was the youth director at First Christian Church, where, alongside Steve Donnell and Scott Taylor, he helped establish the "Thirtysomething" youth events—annual gatherings promoting Christian values and mentorship. He was a founding member of Families in Action, helped establish The Hideout youth center for grades 7–12, and played a key role in launching the Just Say No Campaign, partnering with local schools to promote responsible decision-making. Through the Partners in Education program, he taught weekly character lessons to fourth-grade students for several years. Ellsworth’s community engagement extends even further. He volunteered with programs like Read with a Buddy, served as a Little League coach and President, sat on the District Education Improvement Committee, acted as board member and treasurer for the Stationmaster’s House Museum, and supported Meals on Wheels. For nearly 35 years, he has been a beloved voice for Spearman High School football and basketball games. His judicial service is unparalleled, having served 32 years as Municipal Judge, including interim roles in Gruver, Stratford, and Texline. Recognized for his expertise, he was asked by the State Commission on Judicial Conduct to mentor a judge needing training on due process. Reflecting on Ellsworth’s immense contributions, his nominator wrote: “Gary Ellsworth has been a vital part of this community for years. He has donated countless hours to our youth. There is no doubt about the impact he has had through the programs he has dedicated himself to over the years. He makes it his goal to shape our youth to have character and integrity. All of his contributions do not reward him with monetary value. Watching the kids he mentored grow into successful members of the community is his true reward.” Congratulations to Gary Ellsworth on this well-deserved recognition. His lifelong dedication to service, education, and community truly embodies the spirit of the Lynx Legacy Distinguished Alumni Award. He will be formally honored at the Spearman High School homecoming pep rally on September 26, 2025, with a reception to follow.
